Ten years ago I took a full-time job as an instructional coach after having dabbled part time in coaching for several years. The job of a coach is to support by listening and shining a light on their best thinking. It's not possible to fix anyone but ourselves anyway. Clarify your definition of coaching. How do teachers and administrators define coaching? Get on the same page with others on a definition of coaching. Understand what others expect of you. What does your principal or supervisor expect you to do and accomplish?
What do teachers expect of you? What are your goals as a coach? Who sets those? You don't have to know everything about teaching or a specific content or curriculum. Our job is not to drive their thinking or direct it, or to make them do something.
You need to know about adult learning. You will also need to know how to put that knowledge into practice. Five Practices for More Effective Coaching In the spirit of transparency, openness, and dialogue, I have made all of the mistakes articulated above more than once , but I have also learned from each, evolved, and continued to grow as a coach.
Put away the yellow legal pad and pen or the laptop. Be vulnerable as a learner and coach, and just talk and learn about instruction with teachers. Ask sincere questions. Coaches should not attempt to be attorneys who only ask questions to which they already know the answer; this coaching is disingenuous, and the teacher will only grow relative to YOUR instructional knowledge. Coaching is community work. The administrative team alone should not shoulder the burden of coaching; rather, they should model for all teachers how to engage in meaningful dialogue with one another.
Find or create a learner-centered framework for your school or district. Many leaders focus instructional coaching on the state-level teacher evaluation instrument.
